My first Van Zanten comic in 2018, for the economist magazine ESB. It requires a short introduction… Dutch towns and cities cooperate to provide certain services to their inhabitants, like waste collecting and disposal. Recent research has shown that this cooperation does not result in lower costs and improved service levels: two of the major objectives of these cooperations. My translation: Mayor 1: I don’t understand this! Our communities cooperate to provide certain services… Mayor 2: … but cotss have increased… Mayor 3: … and the service level has not been improved! VZ: Nothing new under the sun. Anyone, who has ever gone with a group travel on camping holiday and had to pitch a tent, will recognise this mechanism.
