I regularly get questions about the drawing gear I carry when I go drawing outside, like urban sketching. This is what I currently carry with me in my backpack… plus an extra sweater.
Ik krijg geregeld vragen over welk tekengereedschap ik meeneem als ik ergens buiten ga tekenen, zoals bij urban sketching. Dit is wat ik tegenwoordig bij me heb in mijn rugzak… samen met een extra trui.

Water colour palette – Aquarelverfpalet
Below, you see my water colour palette. All colours are Winsor & Newton. The principle is to have clear colours of the rainbow from the yellow to greens (a warm and cold version of the hues), plus some earth tones (yellow ochre, burnt sienna and Van Dyke brown), plus a neutral colour (Payne’s grey). I added Winsor Blue because it is a clear blue that doesn’t granulate as much as cerulean blue. It is a very intense colour, so I use it carefully, often mixed with violet.
With these colours, I am not super strict – for instance, when cerulean blue is sold out, I buy a colour that is close to it, like manganese blue. Mostly, colours don’t go to the paper unmixed anyway.
Hierboven zie je het aquarelverfpalet dat ik gebruik. Alle kleuren zijn van Winsor & Newton. Het principe is om alle heldere kleuren van de regenboog te hebben van geel tot groen (een warme en koude variant voor elke tint), plus de aardetinten (yellow ochre, burnt sienna en Van Dyke brown), plus een neutrale tint (Payne’s grey). I heb ook nog Winsor Blue aan mij palet toegevoegd, omdat het een heldere kleur blauw is die niet zo korrelig is als cerulean blue. Maar het is een heel intense kleur, ik gebruik hem voorzichtig, meestal gemengd met violet.
Met deze kleuren ben ik niet superstrikt – als bijvoorbeeld cerulean blue uitverkocht is, koop ik een kleur die er dicht bij ligt, zoals manganese blue. Meestal gaan de kleuren toch niet ongemengd op het papier.
