Some two years ago, I was invited by Jorge Royan to join the ‘Sketching Workshop Group’ on Facebook. He founded the group to share sketches and to give and receive critiques. It worked out wonderful, and I have been an active contributor to the page ever since. Having just returned home from my holidays with a load of sketches I wanted to share with the SW Group, I was shocked to discover that Jorge passed away. I have always enjoyed his critiques and comments. Jorge was always enthusiastic to share his knowledge about composition, angles, lines & colours… and miniature paintboxes. His comments were direct, to the point and full of humor. In our last exchange of comments we discussed the use of black socks for cleaning brushes (as a means to achieve our goal of lightweight sketch gear), and in typical Jorge-style he brought up striped ties, hawaiian shirts and peruvian hats for the enthusiastic colour lover. I had hopes to meet Jorge when he would be travelling through Europe in his white van – it is a sad thing that this is not going to happen.
