Ik las afgelopen weekend dit stripboek van de Franse tekenaar Luz. De titel Deux Filles Nues (Twee naakte meisjes) is de titel van een schilderij van de Duitse schilder Otto Mueller (1874-1930), en we volgens de geschiedenis van dit schilderij, door de ogen van het schilderij zelf – een vondst die prachtig uitpakt. Via het schilderij maken we episodes uit het leven van Otto Mueller mee, het nazisme en de jodenhaat in Duitsland, de beroemde tentoonstelling van ‘Entartetet Kunst’ in Nazi-Duitsland en hoe het schilderij de oorlogsjaren doorstaat. Spoiler: voor het schilderij loopt het allemaal goed af – we kunnen zelfs spreken van een ‘happy end’. Een fantastisch boek – ik hoop dat er snel een Nederlandse vertaling van zal worden gemaakt.
Last weekend I read this graphic novel by the French artist Luz. The title Deux Filles Nues (Two Naked Girls) is the title of a painting by the German painter Otto Mueller (1874-1930), and we follow the history of this painting, through the eyes of the painting itself – an invention that works out beautifully. Through the painting we experience episodes from the life of Otto Mueller, Nazism and anti-Semitism in Germany, the famous exhibition of ‘Entartetet Kunst’ in Nazi Germany and how the painting survives the war years. Spoiler: for the painting everything ends well – we can even speak of a ‘happy ending’. A fantastic book – I hope that a Dutch (or English) translation will be available soon.
