Ik maakte een getekende reportage bij de laatste sigarenfabriek in Nederland, waar sigaren nog op ambachtelijke wijze worden geproduceerd: Van der Donk Sigaren in Culemborg. I made a reportage in drawings in the last cigar factory in the Netherlands, where cigars are produced by hand: Van der Donk Sigaren in Culemborg. De voorraad tabak, verpakt in dozen, biezen matten, jute zakken of in boomschors van palmbomen. De tabak komt uit Cuba, Brazilië en Indonesië en wordt door Van der Donk naar geheim recept gemengd.
The stock of tobacco, packed in boxes, rush mats, jute bags or palm bark. The tobacco originates from Cuba, Brasil and Indonesia and is mixed by Van der Donk according a secret recipe.
Richard en zijn vrouw Gerda achter een machine die de een tabaksblad (een ‘omblad’) vult met tabakssnippers. De verschillende machines in de fabriek zijn tientallen jaren oud maar nog altijd in conditie en in gebruik. Wanneer Richard en Gerda stoppen met hun werk, zal dit ambacht verdwijnen.
