Afgelopen weekend bezocht ik samen met mijn Tekenen voor Kinderen-collega Fer een tentoonstelling van het werk van striptekenaar Hans G. Kresse in Kasteel Doorwerth. Kresse is vooral bekend van zijn strip over Eric de Noorman. Ik was vooral onder de indruk van zijn zwartwit-tekeningen.

Last weekend I visited an exhibition of the work of comic artist Hans G. Kresse in Kasteel Doorwerth together with my ‘Tekenen voor Kinderen’ colleague Fer. Kresse is best known for his comic strip about Eric the Norseman. I was particularly impressed by his black and white drawings.

Zoals deze tekening, bijvoorbeeld. Regen, een silhouet van bergen, bomen en het mooiste van alles vind ik dat bootje.

Like this drawing, for example. Rain, a silhouette of mountains, trees and the most beautiful thing of all is that little boat, I think.

En hier twee plaatjes uit de allerlaatste aflevering van de Eric de Noorman-strip. Een paar vlakken en lijnen zijn voldoende om de wegvarende vikingsschepen op de golven te zien verdwijnen. Aan de nogal lompe plaatsing van het nummer linksonder is goed te zien dat Kresse vooral voor de krant werkte.
Overigens hingen er ook veel mooie tekeningen en schilderijen in kleur, met name de historische platen waren indrukwekkend rijk aan details.

And here are two pictures from the very last episode of the Eric the Norseman comic strip. A few planes and lines are enough to see the Viking ships sailing away on the waves. The rather clumsy placement of the number at the bottom left clearly shows that Kresse mainly worked for newspapers.
There were also many beautiful drawings and paintings in color, the historical plates in particular were impressively rich in detail.

Ik tekende zelf ook nog wat rond het Kasteel Doorwerth, maar niet in zwartwit. Het was namelijk nogal mistig en het gras en de bomen waren met rijp bedekt – prachtig, maar lastig op papier te krijgen.

I also drew something around Doorwerth Castle myself, but not in black and white. It was quite foggy and the grass and trees were covered with frost – beautiful, but difficult to capture on paper.

Omdat het vroor, gebruikte ik wodka om mee te schilderen. Door de wodka komt de verf wat korrelig op papier (iets met alcohol, arabische gom en cellulose, denk ik).

Since it was freezing, I used vodka to paint with. The vodka makes the paint look a bit grainy on paper (something to do with alcohol, arabic gum and cellulose, I think).

Amsterdam viert dit jaar zijn 750-jarig bestaan. Vanwege dat jubileum is er een speciale editie van Monopoly uitgebracht. Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky liet hiervoor een extra sleeve maken, waarvoor ik de tekening maakte. Hierboven zie je het ontwerp van die sleeve (mijn tekening is door de ontwerper helaas wat onhandig verbreed…).
Deze speciale editie is te koop bij het hotel zelf – de opbrengst gaat naar het goede doel.

Amsterdam is celebrating its 750th anniversary this year. Because of that anniversary, a special edition of Monopoly was released. Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky had an extra sleeve made for this, for which I made the drawing. Above you see the design of that sleeve (unfortunately my drawing was widened somewhat clumsily by the designer…).
This special edition can be purchased at the hotel itself – the proceeds go to charity.

Vorige week zaterdag was ik met mijn grote neef een dag in Den Haag. In mijn blogs maak ik vaak verslagen van zo’n dag in tekeningen, maar voor tekenen was er geen tijd. We begonnen de dag in het Mauritshuis. Mijn oog viel op dit schilderij van Gerard Houckgeest uit 1651, van de graftombe van Willem van Oranje in de Nieuwe Kerk in Delft. Ik werd getrokken door de graffiti op de kerkmuur. Werd er in de 17e eeuw gewoon op de muren getekend in kerken? Vond de opdrachtgever het goed dat Houckgeest deze dan ook op zijn schilderij schilderde – dus geen mooimakerij? Ik denk dat Houckgeest zelf er wel plezier in had.
Overigens vond ik al googelend ook andere schilderijen van Houckgeest van deze zelfde hoek van de Nieuwe Kerk zonder de graffiti.

Last Saturday I spent a day in The Hague with my big nephew. In my blogs I often make reports of such a day in drawings, but there was no time for drawing. We started the day in the Mauritshuis. My eye fell on this painting by Gerard Houckgeest from 1651, of the tomb of William of Orange in the Nieuwe Kerk in Delft. I was drawn by the graffiti on the church wall. Were people simply drawing on the walls of churches in the 17th century? Did the client agree that Houckgeest also painted this on his painting – so no embellishment? I think Houckgeest himself enjoyed it.
By the way, while googling I also found other paintings by Houckgeest of this same corner of the Nieuwe Kerk without the graffiti.

We beklommen de uitkijktoren bij het Binnenhof. Je moet tegen een beetje wiebelen kunnen, maar dan heb je een prachtig uitzicht op het Binnenhof en de hoogbouw van Den Haag, en… op een invasie van kerstmannen.

We climbed the lookout tower at the Binnenhof. You have to be able to withstand a bit of wobbling, but then you have a beautiful view of the Binnenhof and the high-rise buildings of The Hague, and… an invasion of Santas.

Na de lunch bezochten we Museum Gevangenpoort, een museum in twee rondes waarvan de tweede ronde het interessantst was. Donkere cellen, wrede martelwerktuigen, een guillotine… we waren ervan onder de indruk.

After lunch we visited Museum Gevangenpoort (‘Gaol Gate’), a museum in two rounds, of which the second round was the most interesting. Dark cells, cruel torture devices, a guillotine… we were impressed.

Een beetje verborgen maar zeker een bezoekje waard: de Galerij van Willem V. Eén zaal vol met schilderijen. Je kunt er ook mooi naar buiten kijken, maar te dicht bij het raam en het alarm gaat – gelukkig hadden de beveiligers begrip voor mijn enthousiasme (in vaktermen: Code Nul).

A bit hidden but definitely worth a visit: the Gallery of Willem V. One room full of paintings. You can also enjoy a nice view outside, but too close to the window and the alarm will go off – luckily the security guards understood my enthusiasm (in technical terms: Code Zero).

Hierboven zie je een prachtige tekening van Rembrandt, die we zagen in het Museum Huis Bredius. Er lag ook een kopie van een schetsboekje van Jan van Goyen (1596-1656) – prachtig! Helaas was er geen kopie te koop.

Ik sluit af met twee interieurtips. Zoek je nog een leuke kandelaar voor aan de muur: hak ergens een arm af of snij hem zelf uit een stuk hout. We zagen hem in het Mauritshuis.

I conclude with two interior design tips. If you are looking for a nice candle holder for on your wall: cut off an arm somewhere or cut it yourself from a piece of wood. We saw it in the Mauritshuis.

Voor Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky in Amsterdam maakte ik een serie tekeningen. Ze worden gebruikt in de brochure voor het december-seizoen, waarmee het Grand Hotel buitenlandse gasten wil uitnodigen om de feestdagen in Amsterdam door te brengen. De tekeningen moesten speels en eenvoudig zijn, maar wel aansluiten bij de luxe van het Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky. Hieronder een aantal tekeningen uit de brochure.

I made a series of drawings for Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky in Amsterdam. They are used in the brochure for the festive season, with which the Grand Hotel invites foreign guests to spend the holidays in Amsterdam. The drawings had to be playful and simple, but fit in with the luxury of the Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky. Below are a number of drawings from the brochure.
