To explain the principle of flying, I made this drawing. You might know it, but I will try to explain if you don’t: air flows in a straight line under a bird’s (or a plane’s) wing, but it flows in a curved line above the wing. Therefore, it moves faster above the wing, reducing air pressure there (you could say the air is stretched out and thinner above the wing). The higher air pressure below the wing pushes the bird into the sky. Or could you say the bird is ‘sucked’ into the air because of the lower pressure above the wing?
Een tekening om het principe van vliegen uit te leggen. Misschien weet je het al, maar ik probeer het uit te leggen aan wie het niet weet: lucht stroomt in een rechte lijn onder de vleugel van een vogel (of een vliegtuig), maar stroomt in een gebogen lijn over de bovenkant van de vleugel heen. De lucht beweegt boven de vleugel dus sneller, waardoor de luchtdruk daar lager wordt (je zou kunnen zeggen dat de lucht wordt opgerekt en dunner wordt boven de vleugel). De hogere luchtdruk onder de vleugel duwt de vogel omhoog, de lucht in. Of zou je kunnen zeggen dat een vogel omhoog wordt ‘gezogen’ door de lage druk boven de vleugel?
